Shireen Maalouf, the Pianist Playing for Prisoners

By Reem Al-Kamali, Emirati author and journalist

Shireen Maalouf is one of the most precious people I met while studying in Lebanon. She resembles sweet rain that flows in a forgotten and remote land. She simply feels the pain of others and hopes to save them at all times. Her financial capabilities were not much but she had a bigger heart than just play piano for the rich and the intellectuals in fancy theatres.

Music is more powerful than we can ever imagine

That boy - who usually refused to listen to any music - listened attentively, opened his eyes and made weird sounds

I work as a music teacher in Kindergarden. In my classes there are hyperactive ADD and autistic children. One KG1 student had a specific case which was kept confidential by the school pshychologist and the boy was being followed by several specialists.

Bee and Wasp

I thought she was preparing herself for the flight. But to my surprise, she walked down the wooden beehive until she reached the ground.

I recently had the opportunity to make occasional visits to some beehives. I was curious about the life of bees. There was something about them being a group of many yet sharing one intelligence, one communication.I would stand at a distance, not too close, and observe the quiet yet busy activity of the colony .

This book will help me develop my own curriculum and teaching methods

Highway 11 to Eternity by Shireen Maluf gave me a whole new "theory" of thinking. And by theory I mean a whole new way out of traditional ones. A fresh mentality, great subject, awesome music, awesome story... unbelievably perfect.
I found myself in this book! As a music instructor, this book and its whole idea will be one of my references and will help me develop my own curriculum and teaching methods.
Again and again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Waiting for more and more.

Interview with Shireen Maluf on The Forest is Still Here

Part 4 of the series

Nature is a nurturer, a healer and spiritual ally. When I am around nature, nature feeds me indirectly. When I am away from nature, I feel the need to get nourishment to make up for the lack.

Interview with Shireen Maluf on Nature Speaks

Part 3 of the series

One particular sound had attracted my attention. One bird was singing solo over the chorus of all the others: Chip….. Chip….. I listened carefully trying to find the location of that bird. As I stood still reaching out with my ears in different directions, I saw in front of me a black spot flying from far crossing over the lake. Very soon I realized that the black bird was aiming at my direction. Chip… Chip…. the sound was getting closer. It was that same bird I was trying to locate ! The flight was sharp and deliberate and the bird was very soon going to hit my solar plexus.

The Symphony of Water

Springs, brooks, falls, even seas and oceans were visible everywhere.

“He loved this place where he conversed with the waves and tuned into the music of underwater life. What a symphony it was, rich and ever renewed, yet peaceful and always flowing!

The water and the unbroken continuity of the waves breaking on the sand provided him with answers to many questions, while the soft breeze blew away many scars from his past experience from his mind.”

Via or the Road for Life

I gently spoke to her until she replied back with a small "miaw". She responded to me in a whole conversation that kept her occupied until we hit the veterinary.

Last week my friend and I were driving on a two-way street when my friend suddenly pulled the car to the side of the street, opened the door and got out. Taken out of my reverie and wondering what was going on, I followed him with my sight and saw him picking up a baby-kitten from the middle of the street. "Kitten" already means a small cat, but this creature was even smaller than a kitten, barely two-weeks old. "She" looked uncared for and clearly had lost her mother for several days already.

Piano and Bird

The bird would let her play the ripples of scales, and then would come in on the notes that formed the melody!

Today, I was giving a piano lesson. My student was playing an etude by Bürgmuller opus 109 no. 2, called "The Pearls." In this piece, the melody was woven in between ascending and descending scales, like ripples of pearls going up and down. The melody had a repetitive rhythmical pattern based on an up beat followed by a shorter value down beat, making the rhythm sound like "taa ram."

Interview with Shireen Maluf on Presence, Projection and Nervousness

Part 2 of the series

Nervousness is part of human behavior. I learned to acknowledge and welcome it. Nervousness is a message that our emotions are here. We become nervous when we project ourselves in the eyes of others. Music taught me how to be present.

Interview with Shireen Maluf on Creativity and Sound

Part 1 of the series

Sound resonates with a core presence. Words are sound and so is language. Creativity touches our inner sound, our inner vibration and expresses it through music, words, visuals, and any other means that can express the inner creativity.

While reading, I was transported to a faraway place where I felt the love, peace, joy, and harmony

Highway 11 to Eternity was one of the best books I've read. There was something special that drew me to the story.
Once I started reading, I could not stop; it grabbed me by the heart.
It was a journey filled with excitement and joy. While reading, I was transported to a faraway place where I felt love, peace, joy, and harmony.
In addition, the description of how to use music and vibrations to attain a more peaceful life was very well explained and it was enticing.

Norse mythology (Scandinavian) tells us about a Rainbow Bridge made up of three colors which connected the heavens with earth. The gods would cross the bridge to communicate with mankind. The bridge is described as luminous. It is protected by the ever-vigilant guardian Heimdall, who scarcely ever sleeps. Eventually evil giants breach the guardian's defenses and the Rainbow Bridge is destroyed, smashed into a thousand pieces under the giants’ weight.

The Encounter with the Redwing Blackbird

I was heading to Beaver’s Lake walking through Stanley Park in Vancouver. It was in the morning and the weather was warm. As I entered the alley that leads to the lake, I noticed the quietness of the place and the songs of the birds. Stanley Park is a forest in the city of Vancouver. Actually , the city of Vancouver rose from the rainforest that once covered the island. As the city was being constructed a part of the forest was kept. Today both city and forest coexist on the same land.

The Heart Lake

From the wilderness a blue eyed woman appeared, she said she had no home, and she lived in the woods,

It was not an easy hike!
There were no indications, and the trails were falling apart.
Other hikers were also searching,
We shared paths,
An opening came up.
Maybe it is the lake we are looking for?
But surely then... It has dried up.
Should I just head back?
The afternoon was falling down,
But I was determined to reach my destination.
From the wilderness a blue eyed woman appeared,
She said she had no home, and she lived in the woods,
Her name was Kate.
She led me to the trail,
We climbed the steeps,

Learn to Stand for Oneself

Animals stand for themselves when they meet one another

Animals stand for themselves when they meet one another
They dance the energy of war protecting their territory
Then they either separate or they make peace
Knowing in their instinct that such are the ways of nature.
We, modern humans smile nicely when we meet one another
We behave and strive to show the best we have
When problems arise, we stab one another in the back
And we wonder how we got blinded in the first place.

The Language of Bees

Several years ago I was on a trip to Peru. As a group of visitors, we were taken to a 2000-year old Carob tree. When we arrived and exited the bus we realized that walking to the tree was not going to be easy. The tree WAS a beehive. Millions of bees wove around the tree as a web of a symphonic buzz. I stood there wondering how I was going to make it to that tree. The roots were majestic and were calling me for a visit, a touch, a connection. My friends on the bus were already covering themselves with shawls and they were trying to make their way into the swarm.

Smoking my cigarette I started wondering why I never put a strong intention to learn the piano when it's something that I know I want to learn in my life

The other day I started reading Highway 11 to Eternity and I couldn't stop, I got hooked.
I was on campus and while I was reading I was listening to all sorts of musical pieces. A familiar feeling of joy and belonging came down on me as I was reading, all the worry I had accumulated during the day had disappeared and I was transported to another place. It felt like I was remembering something that was not mental I didn't bother to analyse.

I read Highway 11 to Eternity by Shireen Maluf in one go. Once you start reading it, you can't stop. It grabs you from the heart.
It was an intensive experience for me, it answered so clearly and with a striking feeling of truth to many questions I have been asking myself for a long time. It's a song for the magic of reality and a guiding lantern to those who may have lost sight of this magic.
It made me laugh of pure joy and cry of overwhelming sense of happiness. I felt anchored, strong and light.

The Power of Spirits

Mythology all over the world is filled with stories of people who fell under the enchantment of the spirits.

Mythology all over the world is filled with stories of people who fell under the enchantment of the spirits. Fairy tales, stories, and myths of all kinds describe these events. Religions throughout history have cautioned people not to deal with spirits fearing the risk of spells and those who did were severely sanctioned. The need for the human being to connect with the spirit world is ancestral and archaic. How do we deal today with the powers of computers, and didn’t we already fall under the enchantment of electronic devises of all kinds?

As we pass from life on earth into a higher plane of existence, our essence resonates at a much higher frequency

As we pass from life on earth into a higher plane of existence, our essence resonates at a much higher frequency – one that approaches purity. This is carefully explained in Highway 11 to Eternity with a comparison consciousness to music and the theory of harmonics. Sound does not ‘die’ but rather continues to create vibrations of increasingly high frequency past the point of human perception.

For me, words were images of sounds first and foremost.

I remember very well how when I was a child I captured words that I heard from adults. I memorized them according to how they sounded. There was an inherent tone within the language that was familiar to me. When it came to speaking, I would recall a word through the particular fluidity of its intonation. It would then become easy to recall and I would use it.
